Quick Summary

Elongated cushion cut diamonds feature rounded corners like traditional cushions but have a longer, rectangular shape defined by a length-to-width ratio greater than 1:1.1. Size increases steadily with carat weight, ranging from about 6.3 x 5.05 mm at 1 carat to 10.8 x 8.6 mm at 5 carats. Evolving from the vintage old mine cut, modern elongated cushions offer enhanced brilliance with 64 or more facets. They appear larger than square cushions of the same carat weight and can create a flattering, lengthened look on the finger. Prices are typically comparable to square cushions with similar grades. For best results, consider eye-clean clarity and color grades of H or higher.

Elongated cushion cut diamonds have rounded corners, much like a cushion cut. The only difference is they have a longer, rectangular structure. Technically, it's an elongated cushion cut when the length to the width ratio surpasses 1:1.1.

How close the cut comes to a square or rectangular shape is a matter of choice, style, and personal taste. But usually, elongated cushion cuts are tall and skinny.

About the Elongated Cushion Cut Diamond

Cushion cut and elongated cushion cut diamonds are an updated version of the old mine cut from the 1700s. Also known as the candlelight cut, it’s considered a vintage style. The old mine cut was used to cut diamonds from Brazil. After diamonds were discovered in South Africa, Brazil’s mines became known as the old mines. This is how the cut got its name. The old mine cut had 58 facets. The modern cushion cut has 64 large, brilliant facets or more.

Elongated cushion cut diamonds display a high level of brilliance and fire. In fact, it is only slightly less brilliant than a round cut.

Square cushions tend to appear smaller than other cuts. Elongated cushion cuts, though, appear larger for the same carat weight. Because of its shape, elongated cushion diamond rings also make fingers seem longer.

Does this mean an elongated cushion cut diamond will cost more? No. Both square and elongated cushion cut diamonds with the same color, carat, and clarity will usually have similar prices.

Just like cushion cut diamonds, elongated cushion cuts hide inclusions well. As long as they’re eye-clean, you don’t have to spend a fortune for high clarity. An SI1 rating can still result in a striking piece of jewelry.

Cushion cut diamonds naturally have a visible yellow tinge. So, spending a bit more for the color grade such as H or higher will be a worthwhile investment.
