Cushion cut diamonds have a soft square shape with rounded corners. They look a little like a square pillow, which is where their name comes from. A good length-to-width ratio to stick to when is 1.00 - 1.35. Cushion stones should be square-ish; sometimes slightly rectangular.

About the Cushion Cut Diamond

Cushion cut diamonds are an updated version of the old mine cut from the 1700s. It is also known as the candlelight cut. It’s considered a vintage style, even if the modern version was only made recently.

The precursor to the cushion cut - the old mine cut - was used to cut diamonds from Brazil. After diamonds were discovered in South Africa, Brazil’s mines became known as the old mines. This is how the cut got its name.

Cushion cut diamonds display a high level of brilliance and fire thanks to its large, brilliant facets. This shape is only slightly less brilliant than a round cut.The old mine cut had 58 facets; the modern cushion cut typically has 64 facets or more.

Cushion cut diamonds hide small inclusions and minor tint because of their sparkle. An SI1 clarity rating and G color grade and better can look eye-clean and colorless with the Cushion.

That being said, these diamonds tend to have some yellow tint to them naturally. Invest in cut and consider getting yellow or rose gold for the setting. This will hide any minor tint, especially around the edges of the center stone.

Cushion cuts have two main faceting patterns: the classic one and the modern, modified one. The latter has a crushed ice look reminiscent of the round brilliant. There’s no official distinction between the 2; use our 3D preview tool to know which one you’re getting.

1. What are the ideal dimensions for a cushion cut diamond?

Classic cushion cut diamonds are square. Slightly rectangular shapes also exist, but are less common.

2. Do cushion cut diamonds look larger than round cut?

Cushion cut diamonds have larger tables than round brilliant diamonds, which make them look bigger. But round diamonds have more sparkle, which can add visual size to them. The actual size difference is negligible when comparing  cushions and round brilliants with the same carat weight.

3. Are cushion cuts cheaper?

Yes. Cushion cut diamonds are about 25% less expensive than round cut diamonds. This is because the cut retains most of its weight after it’s cut. With round diamonds, more stone is lost during the cutting process.
